Division 1 Review 16th Jan 23

Our First Division is well-and-truly back into full flow after the Christmas break, with most teams having already notched up a couple of matches since the break.

Warrington and Cheetham Hill continued their hot pursuit of the title, both with convincing wins. Warrington defeated a struggling Northern 1st Team, who had a late drop out from their No.1 player meaning all players moved up the order one place, basically making their life impossible against the 7 time champions who had Adrian Waller and Simon Herbert playing for them. The result was a 9pm finish and a 5-0 Warrington win. Cheetham Hill will have been slightly gutted to drop 3 points as they were 4-1 winners against Wrexham, with World No.100 Owain Taylor impressively beating World 91 Finn Withington 3-0.

Grove Park had a nicer outing this week as the comfortably swept aside City Of Manchester. Kiwi Temwa in particular had a less eventful evening. He beat COM coach Ray Nevin 3-0, in a night when he arrived with plenty of time to warm up and play some good squash - as opposed to last week when he had a slightly tricky commute, travelling from New Zealand to Cheetham Hill via plane, train and automobile, only to arrive at 10.30 at night, rush on court for a 15 minute run-around before being allowed to go to bed!

Bowdon have seriously strengthened their league position after a slow start to the season, and find themselves 4th in the league after another win, this time against The Northern 2nd Team. This is partly due to a rejuvenated Pete Billson who has been in superb form this season. He beat the fast and furious Bader Almaghrebi in a wonderful game to watch. Pete controlled play perfectly with tight back-hand drives, limiting Bader's opportunities to attack, forcing many a mistake from the Kuwaiti. Bader may not be considered the fittest player in the league, but he is a fighter, and started to dominate Pete more and more, as Pete faded slightly Bader could find more outrageous winner, hitting more cross-court nicks than most of us have seen in a lifetime! The fourth game was nip and tuck the whole way. Bader had a few game ball saved to force a fifth game, and Pete squandered a few match balls, but in the end, Pete found a few nice drives and drops to win the fourth game 17-15 to conclude one of the matches of the season.

Wigan were back to their convincing ways as the 'Lancastrian Old Guard' of Ryan Atherton and Paul Big Mac were back on it, beating Alderley's Muhammad Khan and James Pickles respectively. An accomplished performance too from Ben Hetherington saw him beat Tom Bamford. Elijah Thomas has been a great signing for Alderley Edge this season. He completely dominated Mason Smales for the Cheshire sides only victory of the night.

Make sure you check out to see if your local team is at home and go down to watch. It's your chance to watch World Class squash for free every Tuesday. Next weeks fixtures are: Cheetham Hill vs City Of Manchester (with the ever-exciting Finlay Withington), Northern 1 vs Liverpool, Bowdon vs Warrington (Junior superstar Jonah Bryant is playing), Alderley Edge vs Northern 2, and Wrexham vs Wigan (featuring Welshman Rhys Evans).
