Junior Squash
The future of North West squash starts here.
With squash making its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, there's never been a better moment for young players in the North West to discover this fast, fun and rewarding sport.
Why Choose Squash?
Squash is a brilliant choice for children and teenagers. It boosts confidence whilst improving fitness and co-ordination, and offers a great cardio workout that most kids won't even notice while they're having fun hitting a ball around the court. As an indoor sport, it's a great alternative to muddy pitches and cold mornings on the sidelines - perfect for our North West weather!
The benefits extend well beyond the court:
Physical fitness – builds stamina, agility, balance and coordination through explosive, fast-paced movement
Mental sharpness – develops concentration, problem-solving and strategic thinking
Social skills – encourages teamwork, sportsmanship and making friends
Confidence – watching personal progress builds self-esteem that carries into everyday life
A sport for life – easy to learn, endlessly challenging to master, and playable at any age
How To Get Started
Getting your child into squash is easier than you might think:
Find a local club – The NWCSL has clubs across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and beyond, many with dedicated junior programmes. Use our club finder to discover your nearest venue.
Try a taster session – Most clubs offer introductory sessions where children can try the sport with proper coaching and equipment. Many clubs, like Bowdon Squash Club, offer free courts for juniors at certain times.
Join a junior coaching programme – Qualified England Squash coaches run sessions for all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to aspiring county players. Children can start as young as five with modified equipment and fun, game-based activities.
Progress at your own pace – From casual club sessions to internal leagues, junior competitions and county representation, there's a pathway for every level of commitment and ambition.
For juniors ready to experience competitive play in a supportive environment, the Cheshire Junior Squash Grand Prix is the perfect stepping stone. This grassroots tournament circuit is played at different venues across the county and is open to anyone who can serve and play a rally consistently.
Run by Pete Billson — Cheshire's County Junior Coach and a former professional player who competed on the PSA World Tour - the Grand Prix series focuses on learning and introducing new players to tournaments in a fun, inclusive atmosphere.
The circuit is made up of 7 events with players grouped together in different divisions based on playing ability only - not age. Each event regularly has 32 players competing, and they're so popular that waiting lists often form.
